About me

What’s in a name?

Mine is Selma.

Think of Selma Alabama in the US, where black civil rights activists marched from in the 1960s to demand voting rights.

Or think of the Arabic root ‘Salaam’ - meaning peace.

I am indeed half Arabic and half English. Being mixed and growing up in England, now living in Wales, has given me an outsider's perspective - a vantage point that has made me curious and interested in people’s stories. Perhaps that’s why I chose a career in journalism, making current affairs radio programmes for the BBC.

But prior to that, I was always interested in movement and how it affects our emotional state. I studied dance and performing arts, before pivoting in to my two decades of working as a radio producer.

Now, in my 50s, I’m back working with the body again - as a yoga teacher. But after 20 years of interviewing and listening to people's stories, I bring with me in to the yoga studio an ability to relate to people from all backgrounds.

I started practicing yoga in my 20s, and at that point was mostly interested in the posture work.

As I continued to study yoga alongside my radio career, I became more and more involved in the breadth and depth of experience that yoga has to offer:

  • the breathing and meditation techniques

  • the relaxation techniques

  • the philosophy

There is an endless well of wisdom to tap in to, which can help us cope with the demands of modern life.

My classes are all about exploring and connecting with your mind, body and breath so that you can optimise your vitality.

I am a fully accredited British Wheel of Yoga teacher based in Cardiff in Wales, UK. (BWYQ Level 4 Diploma in teaching yoga 500 hours)

I am fully insured.
